What to wear to your engagement session
One common question after a couple books their wedding photography date with me is- what should I wear to my engagement session? Here are outfit some tips I think are aesthetically pleasing and look great on camera.
Wear pastels and neutrals. These colors work well with my photography style and are easy to coordinate. If you are a pop of color person, do it! Just put your partner in a coordinating muted tone. Neons and very bright colors can distract from your face and put focus more on the outfit.
Coordinate colors but do not match. You will want to wear colors that are close in the color family such as all neutrals, all pastels, all jewel tones. Long gone are the days of every person wearing the same exact shirt and pants to a photo session. It gets a little cheesy looking and unnatural.
Think about your environment. If you will be in a busy background, it is best to wear a solid color or something muted so that you are not clashing and stand out!
Avoid busy patterns and logos. Some very busy patterns are distracting to the eye and camera. A simple pattern is great. If you are wearing a pattern put your partner in a solid color. Two patterns would clash and no logos please!
Flatter your features. We all have our insecurities so cover what you don’t like and show what you do! I always say wearing a dress that is tight at the waist and flows down is great on a lot of body types because it flatters your waist. If you have great legs wear a short dress and heels. Three quarter length sleeves help create a slimming effect on arms. A flowy dress also gives us something to play with and create motion in the photos.
For men, well fitted clothing look clean upscale vs baggy clothing.
Bring two outfits. If you want to bring an outfit change that is totally fine! If couples choose to do this they will bring one casual outfit and one more dressed up outfit. I know it’s stressful just finding one outfit so this is totally optional!
Wear something you are comfortable and confident in. Above all else, make sure you are comfortable and confident in the outfit you choose. Your confidence will shine through the photos and is easiest when you are being YOU!
